I personally would replace with a new one. A new one will only cost you between $15-1700 depending on where you get it and it comes with a 3 year 36K mile warranty.

I would personally overhaul and put back in. Its cheaper than new and just as good.

The issue I have with rebuilding is that you really don't have the same protection as far as the warranty is concerned combined with the fact that most tranny guys/shops worth their salt are gonna charge on average in the neighborhood of anywhere from $1000-1500 for a rebuild anyway. I have heard of and seen people spend as little as $800 on a tranny rebuild only to have to do it again within a year.

The 4L60E transmission was built originally for cars, but somehow it ended up in these trucks.

Go for a 4L80E or build the 4L60E. The 4L80E is for trucks and is a direct fit. Only piece you have to change is the transfer case input shaft to a 32 spline to match the transmission. The part for that is here:

The part number for it is 19019. You would have to rebuild the transfer case for it, so it might be easier if you are able to get it all out of a 2500. Not sure about the computer though. Try searching this site for more info or head to performancetrucks.net. Plenty of people over there have done it, so they may be a little more helpful.
