Ok so on may way back to work today from lunch I was on I-25 and noticed my Tahoe wasn't going in to fourth gear so I backed back down. I pulled into my company and right to a parking spot. When I got off today and went to go get in it it would go in to gear to back up, but won't back up. It will still go forward. It seems to have first gear, second gear, and third, but no fourth and no reverse. WTF could it be valve body, or tourqe converter maybe? This tranny is only a month old. It is a E4L65 with bullet B&M servos, shift kit better value body and a yank tourqe converter. The Tahoe also has 4.10 rear gears. And yes I do drive the veal outta it. I have a tyranny gauge and the highest it got temp wise today was 176. So I am at a loss. Till today there have been no issues with this tranny. Any imput that might help me figure it out would be awsome.

Maybe the sift solenoids? Has it thrown any codes? My 2000 stopped shifting into 1st and 4th after my trip to Houston to get a blackbear tune. I was throwing shift solenoid codes before I went and the increased line pressure caused one of them to finally fail. sounds like the other one failed for you. It cost me about $200 to have my transmission shop replace them. Hope that's all it is for you.

Only the reverse input clutch and lo/rev clutch apply in reverse. Solenoids A and B have to be on. Since you have 1st gear the lo/rev clutch is good.

The band applies in 2nd and 4th gears, the only difference is that in 4th the 3-4 clutch is also holding. If you have 3rd gear, your 3-4 clutch is fine. In 4th, solenoid A is on and B is off. In 2nd A is off and B is on.

But without both A and B on you wouldn't have reverse or 1st gear... so the solenoids are fine.

An O-ring could've gone out somewhere in the trans which, unfortunately, there are a lot of these since there are about 9-10 apply pistons inside a 4L60E. If the bolts on the valvebody weren't torqued correctly you could've lost part of the seal on the separator plate which could over-lap or bleed off shift passages. Or another cause could be that you lost the 4th accumulator piston... if the builder re-installed the factory plastic piston this could be a possibility.

You're torque converter should be fine. As another check, put the shifter in "3" and go drive above 45mph. If after that speed you get a "connected" feeling like in a manual transmission (mph and rpm are directly linked) then the torque converter and it's clutch should be fine.

Bottom line is, your trans guy needs to open it back up and re-check his/her work. A 1st line check should be to hook up a trans pressure gauge to the test port on the driver's side, put the truck up on a lift, and gently get up to speed and monitor the line pressure during the shifts or where the shifts should take place. Spikes or large drops in pressure are a sure-fire way to know something has broken.

The sunshell gear controls reverse and also releases it into 4th if the tranny is only a month old i bet they just rebuilt it with ur old sunshell and just put new clutch packings in it i doubt they will cover it but who knows ....Good Luck with the fix!!!

Sunshell couldn't have been the problem as it holds in reverse, 2nd, and 4th. It is directly linked to the reverse input drum and controls motion of the rear sungear... either by the reverse input clutch coming on (in reverse) or by the band holding the reverse input housing in 2nd & 4th (actuated by one of the two servos you see in the passenger side of the trans). It breaks by stripping out the splined end holding the rear sun gear.

It's best to use the SPX/Filtran Beast sunshell and use the wider sonnax bushing for the rear sungear (you can't use the beast with the factory bushing... it'll wear it out too soon).

It sounds like there were multiple failures in the valvebody and rotating assembly to get the conditions you described.

Glad it worked out for you though.
