Hey guys new here and i was wondering if you could help?

We got a 1996 tahoe from my inlaws.

My question is the tranny make a whineing noise only when in gear. When in park and neutral its quiet. I have been told to check the sunshell, but wanted a nother opnion. I dont have the money to take it to a tranny shop and i am able to do the rebuild but need to know where to start.

It drives fine in all gears but when at crusing speed it goes away.

Any help guys?????

The Lucas fix-in-a-bottle will probably only help for a day or two. I used that stuff in my other vehicle when the tranny went out just to help me get home. It worked just for that purpose and nothing more. I wish it was only 5-10 bucks to fix worn bands and clutch packs, haha.

For the OP, likely symptoms of a damaged sunshell would be loss/partial loss of reverse (e.g. you put it in reverse, it pops out of gear or just doesn't catch at all, and it makes a god-awful grinding noise akin to mis-shifting a 5-speed manual). Other symptoms include a grinding/scraping noise between the 1-2 shift and delay or difficulty shifting in to OD. (Ask me how I know all this :hmm: )

If you don't have or have never had any of those symptoms, your sunshell is probably okay. Either way, I agree with TXGMC, just take it to a decent and honest tranny shop, and they'll probably diagnose for free. With any luck, it might not be your tranny at all.
