I'm not sure about a 2004 but my 2003 only takes the blue fluid you have to get from the dealership and used almost 2 quarts.

that sight it great! thanks, Im thinking i must have the od ball one. I only put in 1.5 qts or so and it brought it to the plug. I took it out for a little ride and checked it agian and it was just below the plug hole.250" or so. right what the manuall calls for. geesss. i have never been so nervous with changing fluid before. like 2.5 qrts came dumping out when I drained it. In hind sight I loosened the fill plug but didn't completely remove it. If I had I would have noticed if it was overfilled somehow. I checked twice in the manual and once at the dealership with my vin. and yep it just took DextronIII. So I put in RP Max ATF.
Lets hope for the best.

So does your tahoe have the selectable auto, 4hi, 4low transfer case? I never heard of an awd version.

nope, it just has stable track. I can take off traction control but its in never going to just break the tires loose. Ya I never knew about the AWD ones either, though those were just the denali's. the truck was pretty clean and the price was right. Also I've read that it is a different transfer case then the Denali's as well, mine is borg warner.
