I have an 03 Denali XL and I know sometime in the near future the transmission will die on me (she has about 240k on her) and my question is this. When replacing the transmission is there any reason to not just replace the 4L65 with another 4L65 or would there be a benefit to going with a 4L80/85? Is the 80/85 a more reliable transmission? I do not foresee me me doing any real power mods so is the 80/85 more reliable than the 65 in stock form?

The 4l80 is not a direct bolt in replacement. You need to modify the cross member and I believe it has an extra vss sensor on it. I plan on putting it in mine because I am planning for a new motor. But it your case a rebuilt 4l65 would be fine for stock form. The 4l80 would be a lot of work and would be overkill for stock
