Did using the hose clamps over the existing clamps work?

Worm clamps failed miserably. Go with the heavier duty T-Bolt style. You’ll need to really torque it down well which worm clams simply can’t handle.

Found some at oreillys. Do you think 5/8 to 9/16 are big enough?

Oops...sorry..just saw this! I took a picture of the ones I used....

That’s 16-18mm, but you can see all the threading it had, so yeah...you could go smaller. I just found it easier to go larger to fit it on. I bought an assortment kit with a bunch of sizes.
