Car: 2 door 1999 GMC Yukon

Dropped the transmission, cleaned it up and refreshed most of the internal parts. I was driving on the high way and suddenly the car was not accelerating and only the RPM going. I pulled over and the car was a bit smoky. Popped the hood and there was a flame on the left deep side of the engine (Behind the dip stick) Luckily, I had a bottle of water in my vehicle that helped me put out the flame/fire. The car wasn't driving and I had to raise the RMP high to actually and barley move the car.

I toed it and took it to the car shop. he said the front end of the transmission needs to be changed and because the oil is not going through. Also, he added a transmission cooler and mounted it in front of the radiator( he explained that the transmission needs a separate cooler which will also extend the life of the transmission)

what you guys think of all this? Any idea where the fault is?

uh, there are no dipsticks on the left side of the assembly. are you saying the front end needs replacing because the fluid was not flowing? the tranny temp is already maintained thru a cooler in the radiator. an extra is added for hd cooling for use in towing loads. that option can and might already be installed in front of the radiator on the right side. if it is it is enough to not need another as long as you don't abuse the drivetrain. if he has bypassed it and/or the radiator one then there might be something wrong with them which should be fixed first and you should have been informed about. if the fluid flow stopped the cooler circuit could have contributed to it overheating if blocked but pump failure was likely or you blocked an internal fluid path during your fixes.
