I have a 2001 Tahoe and reverse gear is slow to engage when it gets cold. I live in MN.. and it's starting to get cold. It's been doing it for 3 years and it's been getting worse every year. For this reason I haven't really been driving it much lately.

I'd rather drive it so I'm considering getting a cheap 4l60e to rebuild myself when I have time.

My question is, what year 4l60e is a direct fit for my 2001 Tahoe with push button 4x4. I believe it's labeled 1KCD on the transmission.

I see conflicting answers to this on forums. Obviously I can't do a 4x2 4l60e, but I also see people have issues with compatibility with the push button 4x4. This is where I get confused.

One of two problems is causing this. Either your reverse clutches are going bad OR your transmission filter has never been changed and is plugged up. Change it and your fluid and all should be well again! ;)

Oops I forgot to mention I have had transmission service, with new fluid and filter done at 200,000k and when I got it 4 years ago at 130,000k. The fluid has always been a clean red and had NO metal in the pan.

I just put in a re-man in my 03 today. The source gave the 4L60E range of 99-08. I have push button 4wd: Auto, 2wd, 4hi, 4low.

I honestly did not know this was a thing until you mentioned it. I would MUCH rather do this than pull the whole thing out.

I figured it was something internal like the clutch.

I guess the only reason I wanted to rebuild one is because I put a new Cam and a TBSS intake on my motor and adding more power to a transmission with 205,000 miles might not be the best idea lol.

I wouldn't recommend it. Bought my 03 with 212,000. Drove it a few years with no real issues, then at around 270 ish I did a motor swap--cammed it, tuned, long tubes etc--did nothing with the trans tho. Lasted a week or 2 lol. Check out my build thread for more info.
