New 2002 Tahoe owner with 220,000 miles on it. The previous owner told me not to let it go below 1/4 tank or it will not start. A couple weeks ago I did allow it to go below 1/4 a tank and it did not start until I put 2 gallons in tank.

Fast forward to last weekend I drove out to Big Bend in west Texas and when I get to the top of the mountain the truck stalled in the parking lot with 3/4 tank full. It did not start again immediately so decided to let the truck cool for 30 minutes before starting again. It started and my goal was to keep the take full every 50-100 miles on the ~500 mile trip home. After the first 100 miles the truck stalled and luckily started 1 mile from the next town and filled the tank. The possibility of being stuck out in the west Texas desert was not fun yet I have not had an issue since.

I'm thinking the fuel pump is bad so here to see if there are any other suggestions. I love this ride and look forward to bring it back to peak condition for its age. Thank you.

When the truck stalls with 1/4 tank, are you gassing it up all the way? If so, how many gallons are you putting in? The fuel gauge sender in the pump may be inaccurate, or the gauge may be wonky.

Yes, the fuel pump is bad. Replace it with an oem part. DONOT cheap out on this part. I cheapedout the first time and had to do the job twice.

I imagine this is a part no one want to mess with. Looks like I'll be getting this part: Fuel Pump - GM (19153713)

How was the job for you, any quick tips? It looks like Youtube has some good tutorials so I'll look there. Messing with gallons of gasoline is not something I am currently comfortable or familiar with though.

The truck stalled once when I allowed the take to hit 1/4. After that I pretty much fill the take when I see it get between 1/2 - 3/4. When the truck stalled out in the desert mountain it had about 3/4 of a tank and between 1/2 - 3/4 when it stalled ~70 miles later.

You have to drop the gas tank to replace it, make sure you run it as close to empty as posible before you get started.

I did not drop the tank, I cut a hole in the floor board before my pump when out as a mod.The funny thing is that 6 months after I cut the hole the pump went out. It happen on a road trip and had to do the job on the parking lot of the hotel. I could not find an oem pump at the time so bought a cheapy and that ***** did not last a year. Ended up replacing that one with an oem pump, 4 years later the oem pump still running like a champ.
