I have a dash cam hardwired to a non-switched 12V source in the right dash fuse box but notice that it loses power during ignition. Not sure if this is the car turning off unnecessary circuits during ignition or if the DC-DC converter is cutting out because of reduced voltage from the battery during ignition.

Anybody have insight on this? Is there a better source for unswitched 12V in that fuse box that's truly always on, directly from the battery?

I think you said it, directly from the battery. (Or the engine bay fuse compartment).
