With my 2000 yukon SLT 5.3L v8, i began hearing a high skreaching noise near the water pump. thought it could be the pullies. When engine was on while stationary the noise came and went, when reving the noise got louder and the sound seemed like it came form the worn bearings. Looked under the engine (after removing the lower covers) and saw some rust on the water pump. a day or two latter the noise got worse. so i replaced the water pump. here is the old water pump. the rear seal was leaking, man these things rust up.
