Hey guys,

(For a 2003 Yukon 4.8)

Can anybody (who has done it before) tell me what I should buy to go with my new water pump? I'm gonna head down to the parts store to get a gasket, but I'm a little hazy on this whole "o-ring" thing. Is that for rebuilding the old water pump only, or do I need it with a new pump instal?

Also, besides coolant and thermostat (with gasket), is there anything else I should be getting?

Thanks for the help in advance!

I would say get the o ring. You should always replace gaskets/o rings with every repair/replacement.

Sounds like that is it pump, gasket(s) and coolant. I would recommend you flush the system when you have it all open. Just stick the hose to it and flush it all out.

check belts while you have them off, I replaced both mine when the waterpump was getting replaced.

for sure do the belts. It's easier to do the AC belt with the water pump out of the way. I also recommend putting in some Red Line Water Wetter. It's also worth double checking the hoses. I also dropped in a new thermostat while I was in there.

So for me:
both belts
water pump
Thermostat
two bottles of water wetter

Yeah, I got belts, t-stat, gaskets, coolant. All the goodies. I just couldn't figure out whether or not the o-ring was a standard part of a new pump instal, or some "redneck rebuild" kit.

Thanks again guys!

Might need a strap wrench to get the fan off of the waterpump, if you can't find one, try to loosen the nut with the fan belt on!

I am about to do my water pump as well. What do these water pumps call for, an actual gasket or sylicone or both. Mine is a 5.3 which I imagine is no different then the 4.8.

Well, on my 4.8 there are 2. A gasket and an o-ring. Kind of weird if you ask me. I'm still waiting on the pump itself, so I haven't been able to pulll it apart yet. I'll let you know when I get it done.
