I need to try find the how-to that was posted. Can't remember if it was her or at GMfullsize.com.
If you have a pipe wrench and a mallet that is all you need to remove the fan. Put the pipe wrench on the nut and smack a couple of times counter clockwise. Make sure you do it with the belts still on. The fan will come right off.
