UPDATE
Replaced the switch; easy and cheap.
Then took the old one apart to look for any obvious contact problems. Well as you can see, if there was a contact issue its not obvious; but maybe. In the line of the most used "On" location there appears to be a slight buildup of gunk(?). We'll see.
Unfortunately, it's one of those proving-a-negative repairs; you won't know until it never happens.
