I may be all wrong in this.
Old oil is dirtier and thicker so maybe why?
Pickup tube could be partially clogged?
You are not losing any antifreeze at all right?
Oil after awhile actually looses it's viscosity (thickness). Say you have a 5w-30 oil. After awhile the oil will "shear" due to gas mixing in with the oil and other things like water (cold start ups or if the air has a lot of water in it). A 5w-30 can shear to a 5w-20 by the time it's time to change the oil for example (this is normal). If you don't do regular oil changes after awhile the oil will start to build up causing sludge. This is because the oil is contaminated with normal wear from gas and water being introduced to the oil over the course of the last oil change and possibly other contaminates being introduced to the oil.
The farther the numbers apart, say a 0w-40, the quicker it will shear down to a thinner oil. The oil is less stable. A 10w-30 oil is more stable and will take longer to shear. A straight weight oil (30 or whatever) is the most stable and less prone to shearing.
Hope that clears up some confusion.
