I think Lee is on the right track. Something clogs when the oil gets thicker or seals inside the pump might be going.

Does the pressure go down when the engine is warm or cold? Or has it happened both cold and hot?

Hard to say to be honest. This morning the wife basically drove it 15 miles from house to the gym when it happened. When I got home to take it up to the shop for the quick oil change the drive is only about 5 miles and it did it to me while pulling into the parking lot.

Also, if this was the case isn't it strange that the pressure goes back up to 40 for a while if I turn the burb off and then turn it back on? I'd think it'd just stay at 0 if there was a blockage....

So more than likely when it's cold-ish?

coldish but probably close to full operating temps. I'd say when I took it up to the shop it was at full temp by then because she'd just gotten back home.

This is also an intriguing video for this issue. The next time I change my oil I'll definitely open up the filter to see if I have the same issue as what this video says can cause issues with oil pressure

I may be all wrong in this.

Old oil is dirtier and thicker so maybe why?

Pickup tube could be partially clogged?

You are not losing any antifreeze at all right?

Oil after awhile actually looses it's viscosity (thickness). Say you have a 5w-30 oil. After awhile the oil will "shear" due to gas mixing in with the oil and other things like water (cold start ups or if the air has a lot of water in it). A 5w-30 can shear to a 5w-20 by the time it's time to change the oil for example (this is normal). If you don't do regular oil changes after awhile the oil will start to build up causing sludge. This is because the oil is contaminated with normal wear from gas and water being introduced to the oil over the course of the last oil change and possibly other contaminates being introduced to the oil.

The farther the numbers apart, say a 0w-40, the quicker it will shear down to a thinner oil. The oil is less stable. A 10w-30 oil is more stable and will take longer to shear. A straight weight oil (30 or whatever) is the most stable and less prone to shearing.

Hope that clears up some confusion.

Yeah I do oil changes pretty regularly. Not always right at 3k but usually by 3500 for sure. I sometimes bounce between 5w-30 and 10w-30, though. So I'll need to make a concentrated effort to use 10w-30. I've never had a vehicle that particular about oil before, though  I'm thinking my issue is a bit more significant to be causing my issues. We will find out over the next few months and I'll post up in this thread as I go along.

I wonder if any of this relates to the dod components

Well, I know that my initial lifter failure issue was directly related to the DOD components as it was a DOD lifter that failed. Since then I've had a BB Tune and had DOD tuned out. What that also means is that I know longer seem to have an oil consumption issue. We're just scratching the surface of the debacle that is DOD/AFM
