I don’t trust the vehicles calculation since that’s never been what I actually see. I divide the miles travelled by the gallons between fill-ups. That’s what I consider MPG.
Agreed. I always calculate mine when I fill up as well.
Regardless, idling lowers MPG and a higher idle will lower it more, although it'll be virtually unnoticeable. I'd happily take a .000x MPG penalty if a few hundred RPM would fix a charging issue.
