I've always been scared to wash under the hood, afraid I'll damage something. What do I need to cover? I know the fuse box is secure, but what about anything else?
I never cover anything I just don't spray directly into the alternator, exhaust manifolds or air filter, pretty much everything else is game, your engine is water resistant for the most part. look at these guys that add snorkels and cross rivers everything will work under water at least for a short period, this is why everything has rubber boots and seals.
now if your sticking the blunt end of the sprayer right into a connector ya of course water is going to get inside, I just keep the sprayer a safe distance away about the same distance you would keep it from hurting yourself. I sometimes do it with the engine running and sometimes with it off. If it's REALLY dirty spray some engine cleaner everywhere first then use the pressure washer.
while I am at it I usually get all the front under carriage as well, turn the wheels one way and spray all over inside then turn them the other way and get the other side.
