When we had the state run inspection stations back about 15 years ago, they were pretty much a big joke. They had multiple lanes and when you pulled in they would check your gas cap. You would then get out and go wait in this glass hallway and watch while they pulled your vehicle up and either plugged into the OBD2 port (96+) or drove it while on rollers (like a dyno) for earlier years with a sniffer up the tailpipe.
This roller test would have the driver follow this line on a screen that would have them accelerate, decelerate, hold steady, etc to simulate about a 3 minute drive cruising, going up hill, coasting, etc.
Half the time these idiots couldn't drive a stick and took them multiple attempts because they would deviate from the line on the screen. One time when I took my built, supercharged, 5 speed with a Spec Stage3 clutch the operator tried 3 times but kept stalling it during the test and would have to start over. Finally another worker came over and did it after 2 tries.
I was so glad when they got rid of those testing stations around here about 8-10 years ago
