Eff that. I’ve done that a few times, they always look even worse within a month.

You need to seal them and use a kit with the fine sandpaper, not a kit with just polishing cream.
I've done the headlights on about 6 vehicles with the sanding discs and they always come out great and last as long as you add protectant to them.
The Meguire's stuff works well but you have to follow the directions.
