What transmission?

i have an 02 Tahoe and I know they come with a 4-speed 4L60E but did some Tahoes come with a different transmission because mine shifts into a 5th gear

I really don't know how to other than Tahoes come with a 4 speed automatic but mine is a 5 speed automatic

Your truck is not a 5 speed automatic. The 4l60e only goes to 4th gear but the converter locks and unclocks giving the illusion of a 5th gear. When your driving down the road at 55 and your converter is locked tap the brakes lightly and it will unlock.

That's what I was waiting to hear. I just thought everyone knew about the converter lock up. There is no fifth gear. Just a four speed.

I've read so many things about converter lock up but I still don't understand what it means, why would Rpms drop if the converter locks up, it seems to do it around 45-50

Think of an unlocked converter as a slipping clutch. Your transmission will shift into 4th at a slower speed like 20-30mph, and if it locked in 4th gear you would be down under 1000 rpm where you dont have alot of power. So the converter stays unlocked to allow the motor to get higher in the rpm range thus giving it the power to maintain 4th at low speeds. Then when you get up to 45+ it locks, and thats where you get your fuel milage. If the converter didnt lock the milage would be horrible because youd probably be running 2000+ rpm. But dont think of an unlocked converter as a bad thing like a slipping clutch, they are made to do this.
