Lately I've noticed this whining noise coming from the rear end of my 4WD Tahoe. It sounds VERY similar to tire noise but it isn't the tires. When coasting the noise disappears, and there is no noise when in Neutral. It is loudest from a stop to about 50 mph. The noise also doesn't happen when in Park revving the engine, nor in Neutral when revving the engine, so I'm guessing it also isn't transmission related. Any input on what to look at is appreciated. Thanks!

I've had this same exact issue on my 08 4x4. Took it to the dealer once and they couldn't find anything. Didn't push it anymore, ended up getting rid of it for something newer. It was very annoying though.

I had the same issue on my 08 Tahoe 2WD. The rearend was shot at 60K miles. Was covered under the 5 year 100K power train warranty so didn't cost me anything.

If you hear the noise when you step on the gas that's likely what it is.

sounds like a noisy rear end gear or bearing.

Should I just wait until it grenades itself or fix it now? I'm guessing a new rear end isn't cheap. I don't plan on owning the truck much longer than another year.

unknown at this time.
you can just tear down and inspect it. but perhaps at least change its fluid and read its condition for further diagnostics first.

I believe 80w-90 was used last time it was changed. Should I use this in addition to an "additive" or just the fluid alone? Thanks. Both front and rear diffs take the same fluid, correct?

When you say a "pint of Lucas", which one of their products are you referring to specifically?
