I'm not to concerned about the money unless we start talking about a full rebuild or replacement and then I get a little concerned since I only anticipate keeping this thing for another year or two. I assumed that all of the lifters needed to be replaced at once, in addition to inspecting the cam to make sure it's ok. But realistically I'm thinking that the ticking is a symptom of an oil pump issue as has been suggested since this only happens at idle when the engine is warmed up. I'm not sure of what the oil pressure is when it happens as I'm currently out of the country. I've asked my wife to check the next time it happens. I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible so I can decide how far I'm going to dig into this thing when I get back.
If we were going to keep it long term I'd go ahead and buy a short block and have the top end done and slap it together. Along with a slightly bigger cam and tune but nothing excessive.
Yeah I'm familiar with the knock sensor problem. I used to be the guy who sprayed of his engine with the water house every now and then to keep it clean. I learned my lesson with this Tahoe.
