Hello Gents.

Quick Question?

Will a 2006 Yukon 4.8l with NO tow package tow 3000lbs single axle "well" ?

More info than you need:

I currently own a 2002 4runner with 120k. I work from home so I baby it on the miles.
New Rear Coils adding 1 inch. Not really a lift. The factory coils from the 99 4runners were "Tall"
AirSprings
7 Pin Connector
6 cylinder at 183 hp
Electric brake controller and electric self adjusting brakes on trailer

I hand bult a trailer that is now DONE and tops out at 3000lbs loaded.

The towing capacity of the 4runner is 5000 lbs

The trailer is only 13 feet long and pulls great. No sway. Been all over Texas in 40mph side winds. all good. Barely a wiggle.

The total weight of the 4Runner with just me in it from the scales is 4340lbs

Then 4runner "can" tow it. People do it all the time. But it's not fast. I typically do 2900 RPM at 65mph and 5k when going uphill. Redline is 6500k. OD off fyi.

I don' know.... a bigger rig would make me happier. I've settled on a 2006 Yukon for my budget. $6,500 I can find them pretty readily around here with 150k on them. I'm assuming at that mileage water pump, timing belt, check tranny fluid, minor trim issues would be the things to look for....

I had two Chevy's in the past and only had to deal with water pumps on Vortecs.

Thanks for any advice!

you built that trailer? thats awesome work!!!!!

any pics of inside?

no idea on the 4.8 being strong enough. id want a 5.3 with 2.42 gears. some come with a tow package, larger trans pan and cooler. brake controller installed at the dealership.

You didn't state whether the 2006 Yukon with the 4.8 was 2WD or 4WD and what gearing.

From a 2005s owner's manual:

2WD with 3.23 Gears - 5,700 pounds - GCWR = 11,000 pounds
2WD with 3.73 Gears - 6,700 pounds - GCWR = 12,000 pounds

4WD with 3.42 Gears - 6,500 pounds - GCWR = 12,000 pounds
4WD with 4.10 Gears - 7,500 pounds - GCWR = 13,000 pounds

I am a little late to the party, but here is my 2 cents:

I have a 2003 4x4 Yukon with the 4.8 engine, 3.42 gears, and 193k miles. I have a 3500 lb Coleman pop up tent camper I pull with the Yukon. It does fine on the flat, but does slow down going up the steeper hills. Fuel economy is not great; I get 14.5mpg with the family, but about 12 mpg pulling the camper.

I do have the typical transmission slip issues. Trans is on the list of repairs...
