Won't start

I stepped on the gas as I was getting on the highway and the truck shut off on me. I pulled over and tried to start it back up but it wouldn't start. It sounds like it wants to start but it just cant. It backfires through the exhaust every few seconds when I'm cranking it. The gear on the distributor is pretty worn out and I was planning on replacing it this weekend. Really my only question is could it be possible for the distributor to jump out of timing if the gear is worn down enough? This is the only thing I could think of that would have caused this.

Im not sure if it could be wore down enough to jump....But if it did couldn't you just turn your distrib back a little bit by hand and then it would start when you tried?

Have you looked at all your sensors? like the crank sensor and stuff like that. Im not to farmiliar with the older motors, but i would assume with an important sensor bad it wouldn't start.

for the fact the gear is worn down and then you stomped on it you probably muffed it for good. pop the cap off and give it a look.

Everything is plugged in but I haven't had anything checked. And everything looks ok under the cap, the rotor turns when you crank it.

can you turn the rotor by hand?

A little, maybe half an inch or so either way.

I dont thank thats good. I dont remember ever being able to turn mine by hand. That might be your problem.
