Wooden trim breaking

Just bought a 2000 Yukon XL with wood trim. The entire center console is wood and it has a 1/16" or so protective plastic layer on it that is breaking/peeling off.

Has anyone refinished this console?
Can I just yank out the console and leave it out?(it does have audio controls on it.)
Does anyone know what trim this was? I cant find anyone else with this weird wooden trim in a yukon xl.

That's completely custom and not factory. No idea how to help... maybe a wood working forum?

I mean seriously, probably sand and reclear or polyurethane or something...

I'll quit scouring the hundreds of posts about consoles. Maybe I'll fix it up and keep it since it is custom. It is useful I guess.
