Did you try wd40?

Bro I couldn't even get the tire down far enough to SEE the mechanism at all
I could barely even squeeze a hand in between the top of the spare tire and the car to touch it with my finger and that was WITH the air let out of the tire--

Yup. Have had to do this many a time. If you cant get it down, see if you can get it down far enough to take the 15mm bolt that holds the hoist up to the frame. Youll still need to cut the cable if you cant get it released though. Sometimes a lot of kicking while moving it up and down gets it released. But its very common for those bitches to get corroded and lock up. Every one of mine has always done that.

Good idea is to drop it every now and again and lube it up. Those hoists are expensive too, like $110.

Once I finally got mine down by removing the one 15MM bolt that holds the whole spare tire winch assembly in place, I took a grinder to the secondary (safety) latch and lubed the remaining assembly. My spare tire now lowers up and down like a DREAM! Of course, my spare tire is now supported ONLY by the cable, so if it ever snaps while I'm driving down the road, I'm ******! Lol. I highly doubt that'll ever happen. It's like 1/8" steel cable holding that tire in place, which probably has a breaking strength of over a ton.
