I run no spares lol... On my other vehicles it has always worked fine. Dirt has gotten in them but after cleaning it worked fine

Its a huge problem with any vehicle driven where there is salt. Almost every vehicle I owned from NY was that way.

Don't use WD40! It'll work in a pinch, but it gets corrosive in the long run, especially with moisture. Lube it up with something thicker, like chassis lube, or lithium grease.
