Checked this afternoon when leaving work. On approach, all interior lights turned on. Opened lift gate, all lights on but everything but the cargo area light faded out after a few seconds..

I don't have my interior lights to come on when I approach the truck with my key fob. So, I am able to open my tailgate without the other interior lights coming on first -- and I found that opening the tailgate only turns on the rear light, and not any other interior lights, like the OP contends. I think you'll find that to be the case with your truck, too (without the interior lights set to come on upon walk-up).

I ordered 4 of these today https://www.rigidindustries.com/a-series-high-power-natural-white-1-light-black-housing-480083.html The same as I posted above but natural white instead of cool white. They were backordered so it will be a few weeks before I get them. I'll also be installing aux reverse lights and the video rear view mirror at the same time.
They're delayed and not scheduled to ship until the day I head out of town for a month :(

This is looking like a fall project now. The mirror part of the video mirror is installed but I'm waiting on these to install the camera in the lift gate.

The lights were delayed another month but eventually shipped and arrived today. I only had time to unbox them and connect to a bench-top power supply but they're going to light the entire cargo area and immediately behind the truck very well (like operating room well ).

Where are you wiring them to, are they going to be tapped into the factory interior illumination circuitry so that they turn on automatically?

Intent is to tap into the factory light gate switch / cargo area light, plus a manual override switch. I haven't decided on a 2 or 3 position switch yet but I at least want them slaved to the factory light plus the ability to have them on once the factory light has timed out. I may want the ability to disable completely as well as they are brighter than I need (want?) in all situations.

I don't have to decide on switching until after they are mounted. My first step is to mount these and run wiring down to the rear fuse panel area (along with aux reverse lights and mirror camera).

If you happen to find an easy tap into the factory dome light illumination that doesn't require dropping the headliner to reach the third row dome light, please keep us updated.

How many dome lights does your vehicle have, 3 or 4 rows? I may have mentioned before but my 2019 only has 3 rows of lighting, however I noticed that 2015-2016 or so used to include 4 rows of dome lights, then they went down to 3 rows, but I believe beginning in 2021 they brought back the 4 rows of factory-equipped dome lights again.

My cargo area is fairly unilluminated as a result of only having 3 rows of factory dome lights which seems really short sighted for the design of an upscale family SUV, and also considering that General Motors "scaled back" the interior lighting as I mentioned.
