Mine did the same thing. The shifter bushing is not sold separately. You have to buy that half of the shifter cable. The part that breaks is a soft plastic. Most likely the white part in the image is completely missing. This is what holds the shift cable on the transmission linkage. Seems like a pretty weak piece to perform such an important task

Well you actually want that weak point in the shift linkage. It works like a crumple zone or a fuse. If that weak point wasn't there and you were trying to continually force the vehicle in and out of gear then you would do worse damage to the transmission and it manual level position switch and/or valve.

same thing happened to me! the original white bushing started breaking apart which lead to the shifter cable coming off the shift linkage. I ordered a new bushing off www.bushingfix.com and it really is a 5 minute job. An e-clip from the hardware store was a temporary fix while I waited for the new bushing to arrive.

Thank you to everyone here. This happened to me yesterday. Went to a restaurant and came out with the shifter just freely moving. Left it overnight and found this forum. Went back this morning and the cable on the transmission side was hanging there with a small piece of the white bushing there. I walked over to Ace and bought a 1/4" inside diameter bolt retainer for $.25 and pushed it on and drove it home. I have the bushing on order that is linked above. Thanks again! Saved me the trouble of having it towed.
