Usually with our 5.3 the 8 quart fill up leaves it about 1/4 quart low. Close enough for me, 8 quarts is kind of a 3 qt. waste anyway.

Common misconception, but the top of the dipstick hash marks doesn't technically mean "full" anywhere in the hash marks is technically OK to operate the engine. So wherever it lands after you put in 8 quarts is your "full" level. What you want to watch for is when it starts dropping from your full level, or is below the hash marks, or if oil doesn't even register on the dipstick, that would constitute a low oil condition. And always check oil when it's been sitting for over 2 hours on level ground. Ideally, checked overnight when all the oil has drained down to the pan, that will give you a true reading of the oil level.Usually with our 5.3 the 8 quart fill up leaves it about 1/4 quart low.
