New compressor and bags...easier with suspension hanging free?

I'm going to put a new compressor and bags on the rear of my 2007 denali, and want to know if it easier with the frame jacked up, and suspension hanging, or with the wheels up on ramps. Makes sense the suspension should be hanging, but wanted to ask those who have been there.

for me, the only reason to raise the rear end up is so my fat àss can fit under there. No need to hang the rear axle loose for shocks or compressor.

I’ve actually changed the compressor with all four wheels on the driveway.

I did the rear shocks with the axle hanging and then a jack under the diff to make sure it didn't over extend without the shocks. I think it will be eaiser like that, if not you'll have to compress the shock to fit. not really hard to do but eh.

Beware, these GM with AWD have an open diff. If the rear is jacked up, THE TRUCK WILL ROLL if on an incline whether in P or not.

Block those front wheels! The 08-13 hybrid Denali & Esky are 4WD so no roll with their closed diffs.

I just did the rear shocks and compressor on my 08 on different days. For the shocks I let the suspension hang and then put a jack under each side of the axle as I did each shock so there was no tension on them and the bolts could slide out easy. Pull the inner fender liners for better access to the top bolt. You can use a ratchet on the inside of the top bolt with a short extension ( I used 1/2” drive) and a wrench on the outside and “ratchet” the wrench back and forth instead of ratcheting the ratchet because there’s no room for that,. You can’t get a standard wrench on the inside of that bolt. I also broke them loose with an impact. The compressor… doesn’t matter but if you’re doing both at the same time, while it’s up there…

You've been given great advice from the folks above. I've done it on my 07 Yukon XL Denali, and it is a fairly straightforward procedure. As stated, the top bolt on the shock has some tight clearance issues, but completely doable. If you let the rear end hang, just watch the brake lines going to the body connection, so that you don't stretch them.

Last, changing out the shocks often results in the inadvertent disconnection of the electrical wire that runs along the top of the frame near the shock. If you disturb it, make sure that the connection is tight afterward.

yep, frame on stands, jack under axle, easy peasy
**and be aware as noted already the awd will roll away as soon as 2 wheels are off the ground, chock the wheels
of course the parking brake will hold back wheels, but the front have nada

You are a glutton for punishment! I'm skinny, and I won't go under there without ramps or a jack+ stands. Regardless of that, your info helps. Thanks.
