Well that is out of the realm of my experience!! I suppose I would observe normal traffic for a while to see what that looks like and then connect the Tech 2 and see what happens. Voltage spike maybe??
I'd love to have a look at the goofy one!! I don't think we would see any data traffic from it at the time of the fault though, as no Tech 2 traffic is happening at that time. What is happening is the hardware of the serial data bus is initializing. That would be best seen on a scope, a tool I...
So I could resist no longer and opened my own VCI to inspect. When first I received it the unit passed all tests. It now fails 2 sub-tests, TPU 12 & 15 and MUX 4WAL of the level shifters. These failures don't seem to have affected my use of the Tech 2 at least as far as I am aware.
No jumper...
Here is a short video of me grounding out the data bus and the results seen at cluster and on the message stream as well.

I will do some retesting today. Just by looking at the video I would say the gauge sweep to zero you have there is NOT a cluster reset of the sort that I have seen from a power loss. A power loss reset I think moves all needles to zero much more rapidly.
I have recently tried a 'short to...
Very strange. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing that will cause the cluster to reset except a power cutoff. No scantool command, no loss of serial data connection, and so on.
@George B
With the Envoy, have you any other
systems not always working just right? Symptoms of a bad ground maybe? I don't think you do or at least you haven't mentioned any.
However, I once read of a fellow who posted pictures of OBD2 port and OBD2 adapter that had 'shorted out' and...
How recently have they been reading on the dash, do you know? Prior to the steering wheel sensor work were you getting any warnings about TPMS?
Just seems odd they would all die together. I have one that has been in low battery mode for years. Also on a 2005.
Recent thread about TPMS reminded me of this so I thought I'd add to it. Not that I think anyone is going to need this but you never know.
Edit:forgot a pic...
I thought your FOBs were not working, I must have misread that somewhere.
The horn beep is programmable in the DIC personalization settings. I can set that separately for each FOB to either sound the horn or flash the lights I think. And the first FOB press locks the doors while the second...
Still early here, 05:30, but up and at the manuals am I. I do love a puzzle.
Both the TPMS and the key fobs send their radio frequency signals to the Passenger Door Module, PDM. The PDM needs to send off the pertinent information to the Cluster and the BCM. There is a single tan wire from...
Check your door switch functions on both drivers and passenger doors.
If you disturbed the communications wiring between them this would happen because the messages from the passenger door module where the keyfob and TPMS fumctions reside could then not get to the BCM.
Well that isn't a program, just a couple messages. The first line sets the header for the OBD2 adapter to send when the following message is sent. In 3 bytes it contains the message type, target of the message and sender of the message. The second line sends two sensor ID#s, front left and front...
As I mentioned I used a serial terminal app. I have learned to speak the language of the network and can just send the right messages to the passenger door module instead of paying for some fancy softwares to do it for me! The lucky part was having previously read out the block memory locations...
I found the Tech2 fairly useless here.
I actually used one of those $15 bluetooth adapters. That and a serial terminal app. It happens to be a hobby of mine, fiddling with the old GM single wire serial data stuff.
So just now seeing this... If I read the thread right you have an 05? I have an 05 Yukon. On mine the TPMS is part of the passenger door module. Last time I tried the relearn it failed over and over on the last wheel. In my case I was fortunate to have the sensor ID numbers and I was able to...
So here is a curious thing. Many if not all of these clones have power supply deficiencies that cause the tool to reset if the vehicle is restarted. To overcome this some, myself included, have separately powered the tech 2 using the port on the tech 2 ifself along with the cigar lighter power...
I find your Envoy issue truely curious. In particular because I also own an 02 GMT360. Your description of what happens with the security light and unknown driver message I expect to see with a hosed serial data line. But the cluster gauges going full scale upward is bizzare. A cluster reset...
