2013 GMC Yukon XL 2500 - moving up from 2001 GMC Yukon XL Denali

Here's a quick example of the de-contenting I was talking about: a glimpse of the passenger door panels in the 2001Yukon XL Denali (gray) and 2013 Yukon XL 2500 (tan). Granted, the 2013 is not a Denali, and I would have picked up a base trim if it were available. But it's really made me...

2013 GMC Yukon XL 2500 - moving up from 2001 GMC Yukon XL Denali

In general I feel like the 2013 truck is really heavily decontented from the 2001 Denali. It's a bunch of little things. The visors - we went from two to one. The door panels - the old one has door lights, leather on the door, softer arm rests. All the plastics and grab handles in the older one...

2013 GMC Yukon XL 2500 - moving up from 2001 GMC Yukon XL Denali

I decided to go Mobil 1 75W-90 for my differentials. Partially for cost, partially for availability. I've got a bottle of LSD grip additive for my G80 handy if I need it. I've been super happy with Mobil1 in my old LQ4 engine, so I'm hoping it serves well in the 2500's engine and differentials...

    Bypass front autoride shocks

Thanks. My own research confirmed the same thing. It's just these two codes really. I was curious because I know that some 2500s have auto ride, rare but possible. If they do, it's the same Z55 code.

    2007 Yukon 2500 SLT2 purchase

Fair. Those factory mods do nothing to strengthen the chassis. But they do make me feel better about light duty towing duties in the Texas summer. Towing is one of the big reasons to get a 2500. So for some the additional coolers might be enough. Depends on your needs.

    Dual Batteries installation.

If I end up keeping my GMT800 Denali I may look into a dual battery mod for it.

    Broken exhaust manifold bolt

Hmm. Good point about stainless potentially being too soft. Perhaps a harder bolt than the GM spec would be advisable? Or perhaps moving to studs?

2007 and up Door handle install How to with pictures

Very nice! If you need to replace a broken interior door handle, this is a good starting point!

    Broken exhaust manifold bolt

Yep. Seems to happen to lots of LQ4 and LQ9 engines. The factory bolts are crap. I would go ahead and replace them preemptively before you need to weld them out. Does anyone have a good go-to replacement? If it were me I'd select a stainless steel part. So I'm surprised you're seeing this on a...

    Dual Batteries installation.

There was a Top Gear episode where the crew tried to fry eggs on the engine block. They were cooked, but not delicious. I would install a battery isolator. I would install a deep cycle and/or AGM battery in the #2 position and use it for running an inverter for power tools.

What were the RPO codes for your auto ride, if you have them handy?

2007 Tahoe 60/40 bench to captains chairs conversion

Yeah should work. On Excursions the holes are there but not necessarily threaded for this conversion. Not sure what GM's frame provisions are. If you're really curious you can pull the upfitter build docs from GM, they're available free to the public. (Can't remember the URL at the moment though...)

Installing a storage / bed platform for camping in a Tahoe and window insulation.

One thing I really liked about the old body style was the true flat rear area. It made the "poor man's RV conversion" all that much easier. Yours looks really good but do you feel you have enough headroom when sleeping?

    Rear Window Switch Not Working

Switch leaves stick over time. Maybe a beverage was spilled. Give it some exercise, maybe 100 cycles up and down, and see if it comes back. Mine did.

Cell phone mounts, who uses what?

On my 2001 Denali I ended up using mounting tape to affix a holder over the (now useless) OnStar controls. On my 2015 2500 I use a Macally DMOUNT. On both I position the AC vents so they can cool the phone on a hot day. Texas...

    2nd row bench addition

Did you ever get your seats? I'm in Austin and looking to make the reverse conversion. I've got tan leather power folding captain's chairs. Not 100% convinced, though. Really wanted the bench because three kids but the captain's chairs are really growing on me...

    Door Grab handle repair

I saw a really thorough repair on YouTube. Someone removed the door panel and fabricated aluminum and steel components that drill into the small amount of sheet metal parts in the door. It's like the most robust version of the popsickle stick mod. My 2500 has both the driver and passenger doors...

Brake pads and rotors for 2013 Yukon XL 2500 4WD?

Pads and rotors are here! All AC Delco parts. I'm hoping to get them installed next week. Thanks everyone!

    California Hybrid 93k miles LTZ 4x4 :)

I feel like these don't come up often, but they don't sell often either. You could always try waiting and seeing if the seller drops their price.

Suburban 2500 or Yukon XL Denali?

Bear in mind that the Denalis and Escalades, with the aluminum 6.2L V8, recommend premium gas for maximum fun. At least around here premium gas commands a premium price. I got my 2500 because I plan on keeping it forever. Test drive both and see.

How much $$ do you put into your truck before saying enough is enough?

I keep a spreadsheet with two columns. One column is the market resale value. I update it monthly. The other is the total expenditures for maintenance. I update that, well, hopefully never, but in practice about monthly. When total expenditure exceeds value, or the rate of expenditure...

    2007 Yukon 2500 SLT2 purchase

Depends on the year. My 2001 Denali has an iron block LQ4 and the 4L85E. It's a 1500 chassis yes, but also has the upgraded oil and transmission coolers. It's closer to a 2500 than the newer Denalis.

    2007 Yukon 2500 SLT2 purchase

Very nice! I paid nearly double that for my 2013. I value my time, though, and can't really afford (time wise) a plane ticket to a better market. I feel like the '07s are slightly undervalued on the market due to the four speed transmission. Conversely, the '11, '12, and especially '13 model...

Oh, and, factor in cost of tools, both acquisition cost, and storage cost.

List of Repairs - DIY or Mechanic?

Yep. Sounds right. I got my 2001 Denali with 170k miles and had to do a bunch of that stuff. I paid for it. I have three kids, and they're too young to help. Man am I looking forward to the day that they're more of an asset than a liability in the garage.
