I think thats the problem, once you start driving the rear squats about 1/2". That's probably when the frame rest on the bump stop. To rule that out, remove the bump stops and take the suv around the block if the stiffness is gone, thats the problem. The fix would be the free travel mod or leave...
A vehicle with 42k should not have many issues.
For high mileage vehicles I usually look for the items below.
Dirty transmission oil
Oil pan leaks
Valve cover leaks
Rear main seal leaks
Transmission shifts correctly
Oil wet spots on differential
Dirty brake oil
Oil cooler hose leaks...
The rear ALC also keeps the suv level from side to side. With out it you will get the chevy lean.
