Be ready to cough up some big bucks, running just water in the radiator Is going to corrode the internal transmission cooler and get coolant in the transmission.
Some of theses suvs have two internal coolers. One for the transmission and one for the motor oil.
I did the NNBS brake mod and I felt the difference in stopping distance. I have never had to test them in real life so It could be all mental. It was worth it to me. I cannot comment on the 2019 brake upgrade.
Like others had said as you put the dash together put felt on the surfaces that you think are rubbing. I recommend the moleskin (link below) because the adhesive is the best I have found. I keep this stuff in my tool box all the time. Every time I remove panels I install back with some felt.

I have heard that those are symptoms of a lifter failure. I recommend you remove the valve covers and inspect the heads for sludge. If sludge is present lifter failure is inevitable. Please report after your findings.
How often do you change the oil and do you use synthetic oils?
I read that does intake manifolds sometimes don't seal like the oem, I bought one and it's has been sitting on the box for over 2yrs. So I can not confirm.
Feel the coolant hoses to see if they are hot. If they not hot, replace the thermostat.
Test again if it's still not getting hot, remove the clutch fan and run the engine to see if it heats up. If it heats up your problem could be the clutch fan
