Negative. I don’t have access to a bi-directional. I only have an old autel i use for checking cel’s but i never even bothered to hook it up on the ‘hoe . . .

Well, if you had one, even an app on your phone that could pull BCM codes, it would have saved you all this time in guessing.

The most powerful tool in my toolbox is the Tech-2.

Lol well i wish this would have come up before. Budget is low - any suggestions or recommendations ? I looked into buying a tech 2 clone when i first got my truck. Then i found out that it is not compatible with k2’s .. ..

Anyways new lock switch is on the way so if nothing else it will get swapped out to see if it makes a difference regardless..

well the budget scanner for gds2 is the vcx nano for about $110 and then if you have any pc skills you CAN make the cracked gds2 software work but it's a headache in general to get running but if you have free time to mess around (potentially a few hours) it can be made to work. otherwise the options go up in price to a mid-tier autel for about the $500 range to get half way decent troubleshooting done.
if you go with the vcx nano then you have to go hunt down the gds2 software and try to avoid getting a virus in the process
to get even the cracked gds2 working you have to disable all security, install it, install the bosch mdi manager, the vcx manager and then pray a lot lol and if it doesn't work uninstall and try again.
if there is any security enabled it will install but the required files will be deleted and it will say it is installed but wont "really" work because the required files are missing, basically the crack files which install in the windows files, hence it detects the windows files are being changed and that ends up in a fail if security is enabled.

Ah.. Truth of the matter is, i knew the day i would need to ‘invest’ into a $$ BDS would come sooner or later. I’ve so far been able to escape the need for investing into a BDS by always owning older vehicles.

Honestly, i probably could figure it out the ‘cheap’ way as i can follow along what you’re saying but … For one i do not own a pc. I have a PC i can borrow from work but i can’t risk getting it virus infected searching for software lol.

But i do appreciate the detailed reply.

You could get a used laptop cheap off eBay, just use it for the auto diagnostics exclusively and don't put any personal info on it, that's what I use (a tablet actually). I'm not paying the crazy price they charge for gds2

My kids have IPhones and they have the CarScanner app and use that with my Foseal Bluetooth OBDII adapter, they can see ALL codes from all modules.

I can only see from the ECM with a Foseal WIFI adapter and Torque Pro app on my Android.

Just for why nots, i hooked my old autel up to the truck and apparently it can read the BCM and practically anything else. I had no problem scanning the normal powertrain functions and readings, but for specific modules you have to specify to the scanner what vehicle you’re working on

Annnd the bad news is it only goes Up to 2013 model year. I tried selecting 2013 and going thru the menus to see if i could read codes but it just says ‘tester not communicating with control unit’ or ‘possible wrong vehicle selected’..

Doing some research the unit ***can*** be updated, but apparently support stops at 2017. To update the autel is free, apparently, but looks like a pita. Also i will need to borrow a PC to do it.

Before i go through the troubles, does anyone know how important is it that the exact year be selected when telling the autel unit what I’m working on? like i get that it doesn’t work when i select 2013, because it’s a whole different generation/platform, but since 2017 & 2018 are both k2 and one year apart, you think I’ll be able to get it to read if i tell it 2017?

I do appreciate the input on where to go from here. I did download car scanner app on my phone. Trying to decide between cheap used Lenovo laptop off eBay + vcx nano ($160+tax total investment) or getting the BT adapter to go with the scanner app ($140+tax total investment).. we shall see

@Doubeleive this is the vcx nano you speak of? https://www.ebay.com/itm/3875292327...lp:2332490&itmmeta=01JHVE1NF3A5AFZCV2PZBBZZQ4

Door lock switch arrived today. Almost 3 weeks is by far the longest i have ever had to wait for something from rock auto. They must be telling the warehouse crew realllllllly procrastinate pulling the order if they choose the cheapest option for shipping lol

Anyways new switch is *not* going in the truck… so, why?

I have got a theory on another reason why i am having this issue. so i am in the process of testing this theory and since i have been observing, i have not had any more of this insanity.

This time i am going to do more diligence before i call it solved and the true cause of this issue.

Stay tuned..

So i might as well give this some closure.

It was the stupid key fob. Not the battery in the fob, the fob was malfunctioning.

Apparently, the fob went schitzo and whenever it was in range of the truck, it would constantly unlock the doors.. including when the fob was in the truck and driving. Which explains why it was constantly happening regardless of where i was, and maybe why putting brand new batteries in the fob seemed to exasperate the issue.

I started to put 2 and 2 together when, i realized that when i take the keys with me upstairs like normal the truck stayed locked, but when i left the keys downstairs, i would find it unlocked in the morning.

Around the time of my last post in this thread, i placed the fob in a rfid blocking pouch and haven’t seen this issue rear its ugly head since.

In hindsight, the steps i took to track this issue, though futile, are things I am glad that i did just cause. For instance, I’m glad i relocated the grounds, etc.

Consider this a case closed. Truly hope those tribulations can save someone else some headache in the future.
