01 HOE roofrack question

Ok so as many of you may or may not know, everytime I search how to remove my roofrack I am sent to the same thread from a few years back, which unfortunatley no longer has pictures. Ive already taken off my rack and just reinserted the factory bolts back into their place. I hate the look of the bolts sticking out and im looking for a solution. Help please?!?! P.S. Id like to stay away from getting the holes patched and repainted. Ill do that in the future when I make more $$$. Thanks ~Caleb

The "holes" are actually called rivnuts. They don't go all the way through... Big misconception. Most people (me included, only because I didn't know they were rivnuts) used stainless set screws (don't remember the size) with a Dab of silicone on them to seal the threads. But, like I said before they are not necessary.

So should I put in set screws or should I try to pop out the rivnuts and cover the holes with a strip of rubber like what is on the top of the truck already?

I wouldnt take the rivnuts out unless you plan on welding/painting.

You COULD put set screws in but like I said before, I don't believe it's needed. Google what a rivnut is. It'll probably make more sense. Or even search "rivnuts" on this forum. Lots of good info...just gotta know how to search

My trucks rivnuts aren't hallow. They have a bottom if that makes sense. When you google "rivnuts" the ones that come up are hallow. I'd get the set screws and put some silicone on the threads and call it a day.

Ahhh okay I see what your saying now! So if my rivnuts are hallow, I should look to fill them with silicone and set screws. But if they arent hallow, I can remove the factory bolts and leave it how it is? With no fear of water leaking in?

Exactly. Just look through it, you'll be able to tell...a flashlight might help.

If you have my style then the only way water can get in is if the seal around the nut is bad.

I just did a color change on my truck (new thread coming soon) and was gonna take the nuts out and weld the wholes but it was way to much work to take the headliner out and what not (I have the rear ac/heat controls on the ceiling)..plus I was under a time crunch. So I opted out and decided to leave them in. Plus it gives me the option to do an escalade rack if I feel like it in the future.
