Well I finally found a really clean Z71 and pulled the trigger. Very clean 03 one owner with 147k and not a door ding on it! i am moving to far West Texas next Spring and need one vehicle (not 3 or 4) to get all the jobs done around our place. I have two questions for fellow forum members......recommended CAI and would any exhaust work be recommended on the Z? We are running between Denver and Texas every six to eight weeks and it is a 1600 mile round trip each time! I tow either an enclosed 6X12 or and open 4X8 trailer. I am looking for a bit better mileage and some additional torque. All input is appreciated!

I'm probably in the minority on this forum, but I would leave the intake and exhaust alone unless they are malfunctioning. If the truck's electronic management system is in good shape, you can get 20+ mpg on flat land, A/C off, and doing 65mph.

If you're after performance, you're better off looking at a computer re-tune or some internal engine modifications. A CAI won't do anything for you with a factory motor.

+1 CAI dont do much on their own, not worth the change. As for exhaust i dont really have a recommendation because it all comes down to price and preference (drone, loudness, full exhaust, muffler only). If you have the money go with Borla or you can be cheap like me and put in a flowmaster. Also if your looking for performance i wouldn't hesitate for a tune, its the best bang for your buck to me personally (Black bear performance).

I feel like better mileage and torque may no come hand in hand.

Exhaust might sound nice from just a muffler swap.

I have a k&n but it was on my truck, so I have no idea how or what it improved.

I agree with a performance tune. I have heard better horse power and improved mileage when cruising. You really need to keep the RPMs down.

The last thing you want too is an annoying drone for 1600 miles. Learned that the hard way.
