04 Tahoe always in "Auto 4WD" on startup

Hi folks,

I'm the new owner of a 2004 Tahoe LS.

Whenever I start it up, it is in Auto 4WD. Apparently this is not the factory behavior. I'd like to figure out how to set it to come up in 2WD when I start the engine. Anyone know how?

I messed with it in my driveway yesterday afternoon, and it appears I must have been imagining the behavior. It isn't doing it anymore.

It started misbehaving again ... sometimes coming up in 2Hi, sometimes in 4Hi, sometimes in neutral, most of the time in Auto.

I'm going to have the CarMax service department check it out while I'm still in the 30-day warranty.
