Thanks for a great forum!
Easy roof rack mod. This 2004 Yukon XL 2500 replaced a Toyota Tacoma (best upgrade ever!). I will be using this truck to carry an 18-foot-long folded hang glider, which needs evenly spaced support.
I used the two crossbars from a rack I took off my 2003 Yukon XL and added them to this one. Easy job - just remove the bolts in the rear end caps using a T25 star bit, slide the new crossbars into place, and replace the end caps. Each crossbar has a locking tab that you click up to allow the bar to slide fore and aft into pre-pressed notches in the side rails. The spacing you see here is where GMC put those notches. Lock everything into place, replace the end caps, bolt everything down and you're done. This will also be better for carrying surfboards, skis and other long loads.
I have seen roof racks on lots of Yukons and Suburbans at the pick-a-part lots, so extra crossbars are easy to find and probably cheap. Note: you will be amazed at the dead critters that wash out of those end caps if you choose to clean them (as I did) in your spouse's kitchen sink.
