About two weeks ago I start hearing a whining noise towards the front diff. So I take it to a diff shop to get it checked out and the tech tells me the bearings inside the diff are shot and need to be replaced. So I cough up the money and get them replaced. I Leave the shop and I still hear the whinning, so I go back to the shop to tell them what the fk and why am I still hearing the whinning and the tech tells me that the gears wore out and that is the noise I'm hearing. He also shows me the bearings they changed out, he also stated that if I don't wanna hear the whining I need to rebuilt the front diff. Wtf is he full of shit or what

What do yawl guys think. Do I really need to replace or rebuilt the unit?

So, in my past life I owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee AWD and that sounded like a whining sound. People said it was because when there was so much spinning and connected at one time. Unlike a Subaru that is awd the gears are a lot smaller. Large SUVS and Trucks the gears are so big that they make more noise.

I hear a small whine in my 02 Escalade AWD but its nothing that worries me. Is yours WICKED bad or are you used to something different?

I guess I have more of a question that anything. Why would the tech take it apart and only replace some of the items that are wore out, then leave others and put it back together? Or, maybe he set it up wrong putting it back together. Does it sound the same as before?

The whine is not as bad as before but is notecible, I had a Chevrolet Silverado SS AWD and it never made a while what so ever.

Bad bearings can cause the gears to wear, over time. Were the seals leaking? A lot of times when a bearing goes out, it'll cause the seal to leak long before gears start to get bad enough to whine.

I agree with your thinking that he should have done a better inspection of the gears while he had it all apart the first time, its all part of it. And he should have called while it was apart to offer to do a rebuild if it looked questionable, rather than pay all that labor twice and waste new bearings. Theres a big difference between a parts installer and a mechanic.....proper diagnosis. Pisses me off when stuff like this happens to people.

As long as he didnt pull the pinion, the whining from the gears is likely the same as before, and the new bearings are quieter. Honestly, I'd let it go at this point until you can get a full rebuild done. You could drive it for years like it is just fine, only dealing with the noise.

Wouldn't changing bearings move the set up of the ring gear from left to right?

The tech told you right, in a nut shell. You were smart to replace the bearings which will prolong the life of the unit, unfortunately they will probably make a little noise the rest of the way. At this point its best to just accept this as a reality of older gearsets. Heck even new ones can make a little noise depending on setup. And, its a very very common issue. I deleted my awd for this very reason, didnt want the headache and maintenance of maintaining the system.
