Hi all
I want to upgrade front door speakers to subwoofers. Not powered ones, ones that will work off the normal head unit feed.
Bose sub just does not have enough low to my taste.
No, I do not want box in the rear. Just a bit more of low at more or less normal volume level. I cna get sub to work Ok but I have to crank up volume a bit too much.
Anyone has suggestions that worked?

Your door speakers are 6.5", and you can get only so much out of them below 80 hz, particularly if you do not want to add more power to the system. One possibility is to get 6 3/4" subs and place them in your rear doors (so you still get full sound out of your existing front door speakers). However, I'm not sure how good they will sound, using only the OEM power amp.

Crutchfield has 6 3/4" subs.

Thank you. I know they are 6.5 4 ohm.(well, 6 3/4, but 6.5 fits) I am not expecting any ground shaking bass. I only want some additional low. Reason I am asking my question, there are reasonably priced 6.5 aftermarket replacements and too many to choose from. This is why I am hoping someone did replace front doors speakers and has some feedback. I could do shallow mount woofers or else.
All I want is some added low. I replaced same speakers in my 99 Silverado and they were junk. Old school short run paper cones. Anything new will be improvement, truly.
Also, while we on it. If you replaced speakers, did you do baffles or not?

If you replace the front door full-range speakers with woofers, what will you do for mids? Just have sub frequencies from the doors and the highs from the A-pillar tweeters? Would the full-range speakers, behind you in the rear doors suffice? Also, how would you control the frequencies going to them? The factory Bose system has its own crossover to send a particular range of frequencies to the door speakers. Even id the drivers themselves were subwoofers, you'd still be sending them the same frequencies, and underpowered at that. I don't see how you'd gain output in the sub frequencies, but you'd definitely have some muddy midrange sound.

If all is well except for the bass, why not upgrade the sub system exclusively?

Valid. And I get it.
I think, confusion is from the word "woofers". Everyone thinks of what everyone thinks they are.
Yet, there are woofers that indeed do something like 40 - 1200 Hz range and specifically made for doors and not for powered enclosures.
Here's the thing. Those door drivers are basically ankle height. Anything that is true mid and up is directional. This is why tweeters are face level or close enough, because their sound is very directional.
So what I get "down there" is only type of the sound that is not directional and felt through the vehicle/body. Not as much by ears.
I might just take a plunge, and do shallow mounts. See, what happens. As I said, anything will be improvement over 2007 paper cone short run drivers.

But you know what... you got me thinking. Maybe I indeed should upgrade the rear doors? They are up higher a bit and fill the void behind. And are same size, 6.5. Trial and error, I guess.
No, I do not want to dismantle console to get to the OEM sub or any boxes anywhere. Any improvements have to be well hidden, not to deal with DW raised eyebrows. Spending money on what again?

You may find 6.5" full range speakers that are advertised to go down to 40 hz, but if you look at a graph of the DB output across the frequency range, you will find that they drop off fairly quickly, below 80 hz.

I want to clarify your assertion that mid range sounds are directional. Yes, they are directional in the sense that sound emanates in a particular direction dispersion angle coming out of the speaker, but the mid range sounds project reasonably well from the low position of the door speakers, as their dispersion angle is quite wide (versus the dispersion angle of a tweeter). My ears hear the mid range sounds from the door speakers very well, even though they are not pointed directly at my face.

As @iamdub stated, if you have a Bose system in the truck, the Bose amp has filters built in that most likely limit the door speakers to frequencies of 80 hz and above, so simply changing out the speakers won't automatically result in more sound volume below the 80 hz range, without making changes to the Bose amp's crossover settings (if that is even possible).

Agreed.
I just bought a pair of Skorns with baffles.
Instead of going with woofers, I bought midrange woofers. I think, I'll be fine with that.
I'll report back after install.
As I said, anything modern will be upograde to 14 yo drivers.

OK, to keep up with my word and update.
SKAR speakers went out. Was, most likely, wrong choice of speaker. I had principle, never to buy light weight speakers and yet, silly me, did "neodymium" thing. Nope.
I ended with Pyle 6.5 Inch Mid Bass Woofer. Happened to have gift card on Amazon, so used that.
Anyhow. Result is interesting and anecdotal, same time.
Yes, there is obvious bass improvement. I can feel my pant leg move and, more of it in the body. Not major improvement, yet. Satisfactory, I may say.
Here's anecdotal part. After done with the driver door, went to the pass door, removed speaker, look at the back of it - and what do I see? Bose 1.9 Ohm! Those are 2 Ohm speakers, not 4 Ohm ones.
Everywhere I looked for spec, it said 4 Ohm OEM.
Even worse, apparently, no one really makes such speakers, with reasonable price range, as 2 Ohm anymore. Everything I see is 4 Ohm. 2Ohms are in over 4100 each and I do not do that.
So that's that.

Yep, Bose speakers do not have the industry standard impedances.
