Hey guys, just finished replacing the oil pressure sensor on my wife's '08 Denali. Replaced it with AC Delco part # D1846A. With the help of my wife's small hands, we were able to replace it without removing the intake manifold and all that jazz. Plugged it back up and the oil pressure gauge still sitting below ZERO and does not budge.

Any ideas? I know on the fuel management models, non-6.2's, there is a screen below the sensor that could be clogged. Is there something I have missed as another fix alongside the sensor to get me back working again? And yes, the truck as sufficient oil in the engine.

Thanks in advance for the input!

I'm amazed at the number of owners with this same issue but there seems to be no real definitive way to figure out precisely the cause of the low oil pressure warning. I have an '08 5.3L Tahoe with 112K on it that I bought and have maintained since 44K. When this first happened to me, the truck had been running fine, 50% oil life left, plenty of oil in it and a relatively new Fram filter on it. I started and drove it for 1/2 a mile and out of nowhere came that awful low oil pressure warning. I shut the truck off for a couple minute, started it, the pressure came up so I started driving again. Another 1/2 mile down the road and the warning came back. I limped home this way for another mile. After doing some research, I changed the oil and filter again but upgraded to a Wix (sorry if the name is correct) filter. I started the truck and the problem persisted so I replaced the oil sending unit and screen (did it without taking off the manifold). Finally, the problem was solved. It has and continues to run great (I love these trucks) but the issue just came back the other day (sensor and screen replacement lasted almost a year - engine remains quiet - no lifter noise). I'm going to replace the oil and filter (75% of oil life left currently) and cut the filter open to see if it's full of sludge. If not, I will probably replace the sensor and screen again but my gut tells me this issue is related and/or connected to the oil pump. I'll let you know how it goes.

Why would the problem go away after changing out the sensor if the pickup tube o-ring was bad?

Is it possible that a factory making these pressure transducers is cranking out faulty products that work for a while, then fail? The way parts are sourced nowadays is so different from even 15 years ago. The air bag activators are an example of this type of problem. The whole reverse auction process that many manufacturers use to buy parts drives the quality out, and causes vendors to consolidate or go bankrupt, leaving the low overhead folks.

Another example: Boeing outsourced the design and fabrication of most of the 787. That caused delays, burning batteries, quality problems. They are not the only ones doing this.

My guess it isn't the sending unit. It is the stepper motor for the gauge. These are a known problem. Youtube is full of videos on how to change it. The unit is in the instrument cluster.

Was your CEL on before you replaced the oil pressure sensor?Did you have an 0521 or 0523 code?

If yes, and the light is out and the codes don't come back, then it's likely the stepper motor in the instrument cluster.
