Hi Guys,

I am having an issue that has me scratching my head. When I accelerate a hear a thumping sound from the passenger side. Once above say 20 it is inaudible as the rotattions I'm sure are making a sigular sound. Here's the kicker...when I apply the brakes it goes away. To me, it sounds like it's not the brakes, but say between the diff and the wheel.

Took the tires off this morning and the rotars are wearing perfectly. While in there, even though I had plenty left - I changed the pads and gave the calipers a lube.

What do you think? Thanks!

So you are saying, I assume, that the brake work had no effect at all on the noise? I hate making assumptions. Noise still there after a road test after brake work? Care to share the mileage? Check all u-joints. Check the sway bars at all connections. Check all shock connections. Are you saying it is a rotational thumping noise till the higher speed? Did you check the wheel bearings while the rig was jacked up?

Thanks raiderron,

Brake work - no effect on the noise. Milliage 111,391. It is a rotational sound, so I haven't gone the route of checking shocks, sway bars etc. Moreover, when I put the truck in neutral - no change it the noise so assuming pinion is fine. I didn't check the wheel bearings yet...considering what I wrote so far do you think that may be the culprit? Thanks brother.

Wheel bearings maybe but suspecting the u-joints. But usually put in neutral takes the pressure from the u-joints and the noise should go away instead of sticking around. Make sure wheels are tight all around and nothing in the tread. Jack it up at all four corners and check for any play at all at the wheels/bearings.

Now not suspecting suspension, shocks and sway bars, because you now say rotational.

raiderron,

Thanks man. We are are on the line of thinking. I am going to check both of those tomorrow. BTW, once in a while when I am turning left from a dead stop I hear a slight clunk and it seems that the drivers side front wheel is trying to grab. Both wells spun nicely when in the air with no noise. I turned-off traction conctrol to see if that made a differnece. Just tossing that out there.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Ok, we may now be on to something here. Check for cv joint problems and if the steering wheel is turned hard enough either way, they can bind when going bad or you may be hitting the steering stop at the spindle contact area. Just add gob of grease at that contact point and if that is the problem the noise will stop but may be the cv joint(s).

Bingo is my guess brother. I will keep you updated. That's what my gut was telling me. I just needed an expert opinion. Appreciate it!

Oh, boots21, slow down there. I am far from an expert. I know just enough to be dangerous! If I do have a vehicle in front of me I can typically figure out what is wrong with a test drive or a few tests and I am usually right about 80-85% of the time but on here it all depends on the info and questions from you guys and therefore we need as much detailed, precise, chronological info as we can get from you guys. If you hear a noise every 2nd Sunday of the month when it is raining and you are turning right over the same railroad tracks and only when you don't use the turn signal, I want that much detail. Works for me!
