First off I just joined and this is my first post so if I posted this in the wrong forum I'm sorry. I do have a couple questions but hopefully I wont make this to long.
My buddy just bought a 1993 2 door yukon. It has the 350 TBI motor in it now and were getting ready to drop in another 350 thats built out of a 1981 truck that he wrecked last year. Were going to leave it carbed, so we should be able to do away with the computer right? It also has ABS brakes on it that he wants to get rid of.
questions are I have are:
#1 If he does away with the computer will the 4x4 still work? I know the shifting linkage for the transfer case is mechanical but what engages the front diff? Worse comes to worse could we run a whole separate fused wiring harness on a switch and use the switch to engage the front diff?
#2 Does the computer control the abs system? If so it would be pointless to have it and what are the steps in removing it? All new brake lines ran I guess?
#3 I know a couple people have converted there TBI motors to Carb, what do you all do with the fuel pump in the tank? He was a mech. fuel pump on the motor were going to put in. Maybe a adjustable regulator, Or a fuel pump mounted on the frame for the carb( 5-7 psi or whatever it is) with no return line going back to the tank and do away with the mechanical pump.
#4 Where does the inside fuse panel power wire run to? The junction box mounted on the firewall? What else is on that junction box panel I should watch out for so I don't cut it? I dont want to start to cut the wrong wires, then everything inside not work, or headlights and tail lights not work. I do know the harness for the lights though under the hood I just dont want to kill power to the headlight switch inside.
#5 Will the A/C still work without the computer? What will engage the clutch on the compressor?
#6 can we still use the stock gauges in the yukon for water temp, oil pressure etc.? If not no big deal, hes putting mech. gauges in anyway. I just told him I'd try to wire them back up on the motor going in if I could.
# 7 I noticed that the positive side of the battery wire runs directly to the starter, but theres also a smaller gauge wire that runs down there too. What that? I figured that wire would run to the junction panel up on the firewall?
# 8 Does the computer have anything to do with the trans? Shift points etc..
I'm pretty sure thats it for now.
Overall I think it should go fairly well. Wiring the motor should be easy. Find a key powered 12 volt for the dist+ coil. Gauges all will be more than likely mech. so no issues there. Im going to put the starter on a push button. Theres three wires on the starter right? Constant 12v from the battery, ground, and then the new wire coming off the push button which will be fused from the battery right? Fuel pump will most likely be on a switch also. I thought about just using a relay instead, but he likes the switch idea better. Which will be easier on me anyway. One less relay to not function one day.
What hes going for is a clean look like his old 81 truck was underneath the hood. Ive wired a guys ford F150 from fuel injected to carbureted once. Ripped the whole computer out and all the wires from it. Filled in the holes where the computer was through the holes of the firewall, and other minor details. Overall it came out alot better than I thought and alot of people really thought for a couple secs. that it came with a carbureted motor from the factory. But he also didnt have a/c or abs to deal with and he had manual hubs and a 4 speed.
Thanks everyone for the help
