Am I able to do it with it in the truck still or does the case have to come off the trans?
based off my old suburban the driveshaft and output shaft tail housing is the only thing that needs to be removed. different transfer case but i believe the main thing that changed was the electronic shift. looking at your transfer case does it look like the tail is bolted onto the main body? outside of that the snap ring is extremely thick for a snap ring and isnt a standard style snap ring. literally just a hardened punched ring of steel. you can replace it with an original or there's a aftermarket 2 piece clamp on style that works really well.

So my transfer case only comes apart in 2 halves there is no bolt on tail housing it’s just the two main cases. You wouldn’t happen to have a part number on the snap ring would you?
