The older CompVT is almost half the price of the CompRT, and I know it worked. Depth isn't much of an issue if I need to run a spacer like even the majority of even the shallow subs require. That would be my reasoning behind going back to the CompRT.

So far, only the MB Quart was small enough on the OD to actually fit within the mounting recess of the Suburban enclosure. All others are too large and require a spacer to get the mounting ring of the subwoofer above the recess.

Here's a pic of the MB Quart that I found on my cell:

Thank you so much for that picture!

And thank you for making the observation about the outside trim ring diameter fitting within the recess landing of the factory enclosure!

I do not know if there is an exact and universal standard for speaker dimension measurements, but it appears that "mounting diameter" and "cutout diameter" denotes the minimum hole size for the speaker basket to clear and recede into the enclosure far enough for the mounting flange to mate in flush contact around the perimeter of the rim.

But you introduced another measurement to look for... that of outside diameter of the mounting ring, not just the widest diameter of the basket.

What is strange is that the MB Quart has a "mounting diameter" of 7.17 inches, which is actually LARGER than the Rockford Fosgate CompVT that you tried. Yet since you said the MB Quart is the only speaker you tried that fit neatly in the box, then that leaves us to assume that the trim ring to the CompVT is much larger than the trim ring to the MBQ, because the mounting diameter of the CompVT is actually smaller than the MBQ.

Is this correct? I edited my speaker list in my earlier post to include the factory specifications for each of these speakers, if you need it for reference.

i'm really disappointed that you did not find the MB Quart speaker satisfactory. It appears to fit so nicely in your photo. I'll bet you were bummed about it too.

SuedePflow,

I've been doing more searching on this project, and found another thread which I bumped to the first page that might interest you, for two reasons:

1. It has pictures of a clean way to enlarge the circumference of the recess that the speaker mounting rim sets into. The poster, Yukonese, created a centering jig that he set across the opposing grooves for the ear lobe mounting tabs of the original driver. Then, in protractor style, he was able to guide his dremel to evenly remove a scant 1/8" of material around the outer circle.

2. The same poster (Yukonese) found and utilized a software program that analyzed the spatial characteristics of the GM OEM enclosure for the YXL, and from that data he was able to select a driver that sonically "matched" the enclosure to his liking.

Here is a link to the program, called WinISD:

I'll keep searching for solutions... and hopefully you'll keep us updated as to your findings and progress as well.

SuedePFlow... any updates?

Since last visiting this thread (2 years ago) I've subsequently read of people installing 8" Memphis subwoofers inside their 2000-2002 factory Suburban and YukonXL boxes. I haven't identified the specific part number yet. The current 8" Memphis Subwoofers I've found on their website list the mounting depth at 4.5", so perhaps those guys were using older models?

Well I have the 8w3v3 and the OEM box from a tahoe so I'll be giving it a shot. I plan on cutting out the oem plastic grill on the trim panel and having the sub pop through it. Just put spacers on the front of the box until it lines up.

As far as volume of the box I went ahead and filled it with water and got approximately .325 cubic ft which is exactly what the JL requires for a sealed enclosure.

I will line the inside with dynomat to give the box a little more oomph and make up for the extra volume I'll be adding to the box with the mdf spacer on the top
Hey wondering if you ever hooked up that JL 8w3v3?
Or if anybody has?
