My 2000 cadillac escalade is stuck in park and will not shift out of gear. i was told it could be the transmission shift brake interlock actuator PN# 26097679. i purchased the part occurs from the dealer for $100 and occurs there is not instructions on removing and replacement. Can anybody please give me step by step instructions on removing and installing this part?

Might be a silly question, but are you on a hill? Did you try to turn the steering wheel a bit while trying to shift out of park?

Does this helps, it's for Chevy and GMC though.

Brake/Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid replacement
- Remove the steering column covers

- Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.

- Pry off each end of the solenoid from its mounting pins and remove it from the steering column

- The Brake/Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid (arrow) is located on the right side of the steering column just above the shift cable

- Installation is the reverse of removal.

To REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVERS:

- If equipped with a tilt-column, remove the tilt lever by pulling it sharply straight out from the column. It’s held in by prongs.

- Remove the screws and detach the lower half of the steering column cover (see illustration) . Note: Some 2002 models have screws retaining the column covers, others are retained only by clips. Always check for the presence of clips before pulling the covers off .

- With the tilt lever removed, remove these screws (arrows) and pull down the lower steering column cover

- Pull the upper column cover straight up and off.

- Installation is the reverse of removal.

Are the brake lights working? I'm not sure if the same brake switch triggers the solenoid in the column or if it's separate switch....might be easier to investigate that since you won't have to tear down the column to get to it.

I agree it has something to do with the brake system why its not shifting. Try to have some one push you forward from behind then apply the brakes to shift it out of park it might pop it out.

stuck in park

thanks for all the comments, i change the sensorBrake/Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. I really didn't know what i was doing but with the help of you guys and looking at the instructions for the 95 chevy siverado with has the same steering column. The sensor was the problem and very easy to change if you have small hands. The sensor is located on the steering column above the brake pad. You have to remove the cover to the steering column and disconnect the the plug and the sensor snaps in two locations top and bottom and it's done. It took me about 20 minutes becasue it was difficult to get my hands in such small place but not a difficult job.

thanks for all you help. hope this message will assist others with the same problems.
