2000 to 2006 models worth it?

So got some questions for you guys.

I'm looking for a new family hauler and I've narrowed it down to the the Expedition/Navigator, Yukon/Tahoe, and Suburban/Yukon XL.

Obviously the Chevys are the same just longer.

I read the sticky about buying a GMT-800 and their issues.

The ones I am pricing are in the 100 to 120k mile range.

How much of a problem are the 4l60 transmissions? Guaranteed to fail? I plan on this being purely a family hauler. Nothing to tow yet. And plan on also keeping it stock.

Do these seem to have the very common rust problem that Fords suffer from?

Best bet is a suburban. Figure I can comfortably fit everyone and luggage inside. Expedition and Tahoe will probably require a top shell for luggage to keep everyone happy.

Prefer the looks of the Chevys but I feel like from what I read the Fords are less troublesome? I could be wrong. That's why I came here to ask.

I am mechanically inclined, so anything short of an engine or tranny rebuild I'm comfortable with.

Oh and I've priced the 2500 Suburbans to get the 4l80 and they just go for way more than I'm willing to spend.

I bought a 2000 Yukon xl from Arizona and shipped it up here to Canada just to get a rust free truck....the underbody floor boards are still grey factory

2003 to 2006 are the better Denali's because they have the upgrades 2000-2002 does not.

Shipping's cheaper than most people expect. My buddy's jeep got shipped from southern California to Massachusetts for around 500 bucks.

Had my 01 since new, 136k now. Transmission rebuilt recently. Other than that just the normal wear items...water pumps, fuel pump, calipers, transfer case seals, etc. No reason to buy a new one, still runs strong and I'm not trying to impress anyone.

A clean 2500 would be the way to go.

Absolutely love my '05 Yukon XL. Bought it a year and a half ago with 172,000 miles on it. Just rolled over 204,000 yesterday. Only had to replace the water pump and upper control arms so far. Which is to be expected with over 200,000 miles. Brother has a '09 Suburban and says mine feels much more solid. Aunt has an '06 suburban she bought with 86,000 miles on it and she just rolled 260,000. These GMT 800's are great vehicles!

As far as the 2500 goes, the 6.0 and 4L80 are a great combo! I personally don't think you can go wrong with either a 1500 or 2500 if they have both been well maintained.

The 2500s are hard to find anywhere. If I didn't have my heart set on a denali by the time I bought mine, I should have pulled the trigger on the 2500 yukon xl I did find here in socal. But it had a ton of miles on it and wasn't in very good shape. You can also look for a gm for sale in California. Though I live in a ski town and get snow in the winter, salt is banned on our roads because it degrades our asphalt really fast. So our vehicles here are pretty much rust free. My 2006 is completely rust free. But our vehicles tend to sell for a little bit more. But that being said there's always gm full sizes for sale here because most Californians want the latest and greatest so they don't keep vehicles for more than a few years. I just saw a 2005 standard wheel base Denali put up for sale yesterday that's on my running route to the gym that I see everyday. Its a 2005 with 100k on it, factory 20s, almost fully loaded and she's only asking $8500 for it. I was like dang that's cheap. So there are plenty of good deals like that, you just have to look for them.
