Hey guys, new to the forum here. Just recently bought a 2001 tahoe 4x4 with a 5.3. Drove it for about 2 weeks every day before i changed the oil and my floor stayed dry. When i changed the oil the problem started. Ive noticed a small amount of oil on my garage floor every morning since. Not enough to drop the dipstick level but enough that i dont like it on my floor. I crawled up under it yesterday and seen it drip off of the tip of the oil filter. I had the mating surface of the filter clean when i put the new one on and i lubed the seal before i put the new filter on. Ive always done my own oil changes and this is a first for a filter leak. Now ive broused some and some say rear main seal, which i dont see an oil change causing that. and some say an oil filter adapter gasket, Which that sounds liek that could be me. If thats my case how close should i watch it and how much of a job to replace it? thanks

Can you get under your truck and snap a pic of where you think it's leaking? What is the brand and part number of your oil filter? Unless the old filter gasket came off and stayed on the mount and you put the new filter on top of it creating 2 gaskets (done that by mistake in the past and has the same results you are talking about), then I'd say either you got the wrong filter or the gasket might have been damaged prior to installation! Done many oil changed on our denali and never once got close to having a leak out of the filter!

if it isnt the 2 gaskets its the oil cooler feed just above the filter. remove it, RTV it and resinstall. if you dont have a cooler (no lines coming out of it) its even easier. just a cap.

my 01 developed a leak at the rear cover gasket. and it leaked, like alot, puddles. i just sold it though. told the guy what he needed to do to fix it. not a big deal. just time consuming to pull the trans back.

Are you sure that the filter is on tight enough?

I crawled up under it and it appears to be coming from a plate right above the oil filter with 2 bolts in it. I put a wrench on them and was able to get 1/4 turn to the tight out of each bolt. The old filter seal was not stuck on the motor and the filter was put on as tight as i could get it with my hands. Im not putting a wrench on it. Ill deal with a leak before i cuss another wrongfully installed oil filter ive cussed enough of those thru the years hahahha

Ever figure out the problem here? I have the same problem with mine. Seems like my oil filter is covered with oil and I'm not sure what course of action to take next. I'm thinking dye just to locate the exact source and go from there. Anyone ever had this experience?
